Latest release: v0.8.0 — page checked 12 October 2026. EffectCraft is free and open-source (MIT or Apache-2.0), and every file below links to the project’s own GitHub release. This independent guide does not repackage, mirror or host the software. Pick your file, then verify it against the v0.8.0 SHA-256 checksum list before you open it.

Which file do I need?
| Your computer | Pick this |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 on Intel or AMD, 64-bit | Windows x64 — .msi installer or portable .zip |
| Windows 11 on an ARM laptop (Snapdragon and similar) | Windows ARM64 |
| Older 32-bit Windows | Windows x86 — only for genuinely 32-bit systems; Windows 11 is 64-bit only |
| Mac with Apple silicon or Intel | macOS, universal .dmg (one file covers both) |
| Linux, x86_64 | AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm or tarball |
| Linux, ARM64 (aarch64) / RISC-V 64 | aarch64 packages / riscv64 tarball only |
| FreeBSD 14, x86_64 | FreeBSD tarball |
| Nothing installed — or your machine is not ready yet | Browser build, hosted by you (needs WebGPU) |
Not sure which architecture you have on Windows? Open Settings → System → About and read the System type line: x64-based processor means x64, ARM-based processor means ARM64. On a Mac, About This Mac shows the chip; a universal .dmg works either way.
Default answer if you want one: on Linux this page recommends the AppImage (download it, mark it executable, and run it). On Windows, take the x64 .msi unless you specifically want a no-install copy.
Launcher or standalone install?
Both give you the same application. The difference is who keeps it current:
| ArtCraft Launcher | Standalone installer | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | One installer that manages EffectCraft together with the other Crafting Apps, picks a suitable build for your machine | EffectCraft on its own, no launcher required |
| Updates | Keeps EffectCraft updated for you | Does not update itself — come back to this page (or the official page) for new versions |
| Choose it if | You expect to try more than one app, or you want updates handled | You want one file and nothing else on disk |
You can add the Launcher later: it finds an existing EffectCraft installation and keeps it updated.
EffectCraft download for Windows
Three architectures, two formats each — six official files:
| Build | Installer | Portable |
|---|---|---|
| x64 (64-bit Intel/AMD) | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-x64.msi | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-x64-portable.zip |
| ARM64 (Snapdragon and other ARM PCs) | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-arm64.msi | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-arm64-portable.zip |
| x86 (32-bit) | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-x86.msi | effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-x86-portable.zip |
.msi vs portable .zip: the MSI runs an installer — it asks where to install (Program Files by default) and later versions install into the same folder. The portable zip is unpack-and-run, with nothing added to the system. If you download the portable build and then wonder why it is not in your Start menu, that is why.
Installers and executables are code-signed (README, checked 2026-10-12). To install silently into a folder of your choice:
msiexec /i effectcraft-0.8.0-windows-x64.msi /qn INSTALLFOLDER="D:\Apps\EffectCraft"
On a Windows ARM laptop: the ARM64 build runs natively, without x64 emulation. The maintainers’ README says CI installs the MSI on Windows 11 ARM64 hardware, checks the programs’ architecture and runs the CLI. It has not yet opened the GUI or run the full test suite natively on ARM64.
EffectCraft download for Mac
| Build | File | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| App, universal (Apple silicon + Intel) | effectcraft-0.8.0-macos-universal.dmg | Signed and notarized |
| Command-line tool, universal | effectcraft-cli-0.8.0-macos-universal.zip | Signed and notarized |
The .dmg is the one most people want. The CLI archive is for scripts and automation — if you want the interface, take the disk image.
Both files are signed and notarized, and macOS is the most tested platform — the maintainers say so directly: “macOS is the most tested platform. Linux and Windows users have hit basic interaction bugs, which we’re fixing first.” (README)
So if macOS refuses to open a downloaded copy, treat it as a signal about where the file came from before you go looking in system settings — the officially published files carry a signature and a notarization ticket.
EffectCraft download for Linux
| Format | x86_64 | aarch64 (ARM64) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppImage | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-aarch64.AppImage | Mark executable and run; AppImageUpdate support (.zsync) |
| Flatpak | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.flatpak | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-aarch64.flatpak | Sandboxed: flatpak install --user <file> |
| deb | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.deb | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-aarch64.deb | Debian / Ubuntu |
| rpm | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.rpm | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-aarch64.rpm | Fedora / RHEL / openSUSE |
| Tarball | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz | effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-aarch64.tar.gz | Unpack anywhere |
Flatpak needs Flatpak installed first, then:
flatpak install --user ./effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-x86_64.flatpak
RISC-V 64 ships as a tarball only — effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-riscv64.tar.gz — and needs glibc 2.39+ (Ubuntu 24.04+, Debian 13+). Find it in the official release assets.
One Linux behaviour worth knowing before you hunt for a bug: on native Wayland sessions the current window backend does not deliver file-hover or file-drop events, so dragging a video onto the window does nothing. Use File ▸ Import ▸ File… (it accepts multiple files), or start EffectCraft through XWayland if it is installed and DISPLAY is set:
env -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY effectcraft
Dropping media anywhere in the window works on X11/XWayland, Windows and macOS. On native Wayland the app shows a startup notice pointing at the File ▸ Import fallback.
On Gentoo, a community overlay packages the Linux release as media-video/effectcraft-bin. It is not maintained by the EffectCraft team — details are in the README.
FreeBSD and the browser build
FreeBSD x86_64 — effectcraft-0.8.0-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz.
Browser build — effectcraft-web-0.8.0.zip: host the static site yourself and open it in a modern browser with WebGPU. It is a different package from the desktop installers and requires a static server; downloading the zip alone does not give you a hosted web app.
What are the EffectCraft system requirements?
The project publishes no minimum RAM, VRAM or disk figure — not on the official page, not in the README, not in its parity documents. What it does publish is more useful than a table:
| Your machine | What the official hardware document says |
|---|---|
| Windows | GPU compositing uses Vulkan; Direct3D 12 currently fails (FXC can’t compile the pointwise kernel, issue #613) |
| macOS | Metal (via wgpu) — and the most tested platform |
| Linux | Vulkan |
| Browser build | WebGPU, running in frame workers |
| No GPU, or a low-VRAM one | There is a CPU fallback, and the app falls back automatically when VRAM runs out |
| Hardware video decode/encode | None on any platform (no VideoToolbox, NVENC, Quick Sync or VA-API) — the document ties this to 4K playback and export speed |
| Performance | The only internal figure published: Advanced 3D at 1080p, 290 ms per frame on an M4 Pro (GPU); 4K and heavy multi-layer projects have not been measured |
| Tablets, HDR | Tablet pressure is not read; HDR displays get tone-mapped SDR output |
Source: hardware-parity.md, reviewed 2026-10-10, against After Effects 2026. Two things that table is not: the ≈ 40% in that document is the project’s self-grade of how close its hardware support is to After Effects — not a pass mark for your computer; and “Windows needs a Vulkan-capable driver” is an inference from that page, not a published requirement.
Practical version: if you work in 4K today, expect this build to be slower than After Effects, because there is no hardware decode or encode on any platform. Test with your own footage before a deadline depends on it. If your machine is unusual, test a small project first; the self-hosted browser build is another option when WebGPU is available.
How to verify your download
The v0.8.0 release ships a SHA256SUMS.txt checksum list for its published binaries. If you downloaded one package, calculate its hash and compare it with the line for that exact filename:
sha256sum your-file-name # Linux
shasum -a 256 your-file-name # macOS
Get-FileHash .\your-file-name -Algorithm SHA256 # Windows PowerShell
Run it from the folder that holds the file, or give the full path. A matching hash means the bytes are identical to what the project published — it is not a statement that the software has no defects. A checksum from a newer release will not validate an older installer, and vice versa.
FAQ
Where is the official EffectCraft download?
Two places, both run by the project: the EffectCraft page on getartcraft.com (the maintainers call this the easiest way to install it) and the GitHub releases. This site does not repackage, mirror or host the software.
Is EffectCraft free — and can I use it commercially?
Yes and yes. It is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, at your option, which is friendly to commercial use. Note the boundary: the ArtCraft name, wordmark and logos are trademarks and are not covered by that licence — forks and modified versions must remove them.
Which Windows installer should I choose?
Match the file to your system type: x64 for most 64-bit Intel/AMD machines, arm64 for Windows on ARM laptops, x86 only for genuinely 32-bit Windows. Check Settings → System → About → System type if you are unsure. Then choose the format: .msi to install (it will also be updated in place by later versions) or portable .zip for nothing added to the system.
Do I have to install the ArtCraft Launcher?
No. Standalone installers exist alongside it. The launcher’s real advantage is updates — the standalone packages do not update themselves, so you come back to the official page for each new version. Install the launcher later and it will find EffectCraft and keep it updated from then on.
Should I use the ARM64 build on a Windows ARM laptop?
If you want native performance, yes — it runs without x64 emulation. Know how far it has been tested: CI installs that MSI on Windows 11 ARM64 hardware and checks that both programs are ARM64 and that the command-line tool runs, but the app’s window has not been opened and the test suite has not run natively on ARM64 yet. If something behaves oddly, report it — that is the build the maintainers most need feedback on.
Do I need Rust to install EffectCraft?
No. Rust 1.95 or newer is only needed if you build from source. The official releases page provides ready-made installers for every platform on this page.
What should I do if the checksum does not match?
Do not open the file. Confirm three things first: the installer filename and its version, and that SHA256SUMS.txt came from the same release. Check you compared the line for the exact filename, then compute the hash again. If it still differs, download the file again from the official page or the matching GitHub release. A hash from one release will not validate a file from another.
Is this build up to date? Why does another site show an older version?
v0.8.0 was the latest release when this page was checked on 12 October 2026. A development branch commit titled “Release prep: 0.9.0” already exists, so a newer release can appear at any time. If this page and the latest GitHub release disagree, use the release page and the checksum list for the version you actually download. A page still advertising 0.7.0 or earlier was already out of date on our check date.
What should I do right after installing?
Run the loop once before you need it for real work: open the app, make a small composition, save an .ecproj, quit, reopen it, and export one MP4. Four moves confirm the install is alive on your machine — and then make your first animated title is the shortest real exercise to follow.
Which official files exist in v0.8.0?
The GitHub release shows 26 assets, including two source-code archives. The table below summarizes the installable builds; open the release page for the full asset list, including AppImage update files.
| Platform | Files |
|---|---|
| Windows | x64, ARM64 and x86 installers and portable zips; see the exact filenames in the Windows table above |
| macOS | effectcraft-0.8.0-macos-universal.dmg, effectcraft-cli-0.8.0-macos-universal.zip |
| Linux | AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm and tar.gz for x86_64 and aarch64, plus effectcraft-0.8.0-linux-riscv64.tar.gz |
| FreeBSD | effectcraft-0.8.0-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz |
| Web | effectcraft-web-0.8.0.zip |
| Checksums | SHA256SUMS.txt |
For an exact inventory, use the v0.8.0 release assets. If a third-party page offers a binary under another name, compare it against that official list before running it.
Why choose the project’s own files
The project’s release page is the source for the current version and its matching checksum list. At our 12 October 2026 check, v0.8.0 was latest; a third-party download page may lag behind. Compare the version and filename against the official release before opening a package.
The same reasoning is why this page does not host anything. Every link goes to the project’s own release assets, so the file you get is the file the maintainers published, with the checksum list one click away.
Where to go next
- Install it and start: make your first animated title in EffectCraft — a four-second exercise that ends with an MP4 you can check.
- Weighing it against After Effects: EffectCraft vs After Effects — what carries over, what does not, and where the two diverge.
- Something not working? The windows and steps behind these limits are collected in the comparison page’s FAQ:
.aepprojects,.ffxpresets and After Effects plug-ins, all in one place.
